Renowned lawyer Donald Kipkorir has weighed in on the firestorm touched off by the National Police Service (NPS) announcement to withdraw security and firearms for VIPs.
In a tweet on Monday, the flamboyant lawyer said that the issuance of firearms' certificate is not a constitutional right as has been argued in some quarters.
Telling off those who have faulted the move by the NPS to withdraw security for suspected criminal VIPs, he went on to say that the certificate can be withdrawn at any time without the firearm holders being informed.
"Issuance of firearms certificates to individuals & provision of security to VIPs is a prerogative of the Executive & not a Constitutional Right ... A prerogative can be withdrawn without notice & is not a legitimate expectation to file suit. Executive can’t be impugned for this," the renowned lawyer said in his tweet.
On Monday, the NPS issued a statement on its Twitter handle to the effect that the security of high profile individuals suspected of involvement in crime would have their firearms and security withdrawn.
A number of personalities have faulted the NPS announcement, contending that it goes against the principle of presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
