The body of Anthony Gitongo, a street urchin who is alleged to have been killed by a police officer and the body dumped in the Sosiani River has been retrieved.
According to Eldoret West OCPD Eliud Maiyo, the body of the deceased was retrieved from the river on Thursday at 9:00 pm and later taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for postmortem.
“I want to confirmed that the body of the deceased who drowned last Friday has been retrieved and his body taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) awaiting postmortem to know what killed him,” said the Eldoret West OCPD.
Maiyo who spoke to the press in his office on Thursday refuted claims that police officers handcuffed him and threw his body in the Sosiani river.
“We are going with investigations so that we satisfy the family so that we may know if the deceased threw himself or he was thrown by the police which is not true as alleged by the suspect's relatives,” said Maiyo.
Maiyo assured the family of the deceased that investigations are ongoing and sooner or later those involved will be unearthed and that so far, the officers that were on duty have already recorded statements on the same.
The sister of the deceased, Monica Atoka, had earlier claimed that the police handcuffed the deceased and threw him in the river last Friday.
