Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga on Sunday toured North Rift, the first time since 2017 fiercely contested polls.
North Rift region has traditionally voted for Jubilee since 2013 due to Deputy President William Ruto. However, the region is facing uncertainty due to rebellion waged by a section of leaders.
Elgeyo-Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos ushered in Mr Odinga at Chebara Primary School where he's attending the retirement of Ruth Kiptoo, mother-in-law to Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny.
Mr Tolgos recently ditched Tangatanga troops, arguing that most of the members were disrespectful. On Saturday, he had promised to usher in Raila.
“I have received the invite and I will personally be there to welcome the former prime minister,” said Mr Tolgos.
Elgeyo-Marakwet ODM chairman Micah Kigen said they were ready to welcome Mr Odinga in Mr Ruto’s backyard, noting his visit was the continuation of the Building Bridges campaign that started with the March 9, 2018 handshake.
“One of his core responsibilities as a key partner in the handshake with the President is to explain to the people the reason why togetherness and cohesion are the most important things we currently need in the country,” said Mr Kigen.
The function is likely to turn political with Kutuny also have announced his rebellion against Deputy President William Ruto who he accuses of taking advantage of North Rift leaders.
Top county security team also received Raila, another indication that he has a strong say in government despite being in opposition.
