Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju has said that it would not be easy to defend Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko against plans of impeachment because he is facing criminal charges.
In a Tv interview, Tuju said that Sonko has been indicted of allegedly embezzling county funds and that has nothing to do with the Jubilee affairs. He argued that the Members of the County Assembly can go ahead and impeach the governor at the end of the day because of the charges he is facing.
"He is facing criminal charges and it would be difficult to support Sonko against an impeachment motion," he said.
Tuju also said that the Jubilee Party found itself at the crossroads when the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi was accused of abuse of office.
He argued that the party had nothing it could do to save the speaker from being impeached. Tuju noted that there are some actions that are beyond the party and things have to be taken the way they come.
"When Elachi was impeached by MCAs, there was nothing the party could do to save her," he said.
He further said that the governor was elected by the people of Nairobi and the party might not be to blame for his shortcomings.
"MikeSonko is a product of the Kenyan political system and we brought in a competent professional to help him run Nairobi. We didn't know about his resignation. Had he been a politician, he would have first consulted," he said.
This comes with Sonko facing graft charges of misappropriating county funds of up to Sh357 million among other charges which he was later released on an Sh15 million bail after denying all the charges.
