Rarieda lawmaker Otiende Amollo has argued that the ongoing race for the Kibra parliamentary seat is all about the 2022 general elections.
The race has since been dominated by three players, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the Amani National Congress (ANC) and the ruling Jubilee Party.
Amollo, a member of the ODM party, argues that Jubilee is trying to use the race to penetrate more into city politics through its candidate McDonald Mariga, ahead of 2022.
Speaking on Tuesday morning during NTV's AM Live show, the lawmaker opined that the party thinks that Mariga is the best man to win the Kibra seat, based on his ethnic background.
"The Jubilee candidature is about 2022. It’s is a trial on how to enter Nairobi. In Mariga, they have someone who, in their own words, could come and capture the Luhya vote," he said.
His remarks come at a time when different candidates have intensified their campaigns as the November 7 mini poll draws nearer.
Mariga has been viewed by a section of politicians as a project of Deputy President William Ruto, who is seeking to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2022 polls.
ODM and ANC have fielded Imran Okoth and Eliud Owalo respectively.
