Members of Parliament (MPs) from Nakuru County have opposed the push by senators to have changes to the constitution to make the Senate more powerful.
Led by Nakuru County MPs’ caucus chairman Kimani Ngunjiri, Bahati MP, and whip, Nakuru Town West MP Samuel Arama, the legislators also opposed the proposal to have the Senate as the Upper house.
The Senators want to assume the role of vetting state officers, a function currently undertaken by MPs.
The MPs, who addressed media on Saturday, called on Senators to stick to oversight role.
“It is shameful that the senators want more powers yet they have failed to play their oversight role. They should ensure they play their oversight role before demanding for other powers,” said Ngunjiri.
Ngunjiri said Kenyans are already burdened by the large number of leaders and any constitutional change should be to reduce the number of leaders.
He also wants senators to work from counties.
“We should now look on how we can amend the constitution so that Senators can work from counties,” said Ngunjiri.
MP Arama said the senate should be scrapped.
“Senators seem not to understand their roles. They should not compete with the MPs. In fact, I think it is time that we do away with Senate or we amend the constitution so that they can work from counties,” he said.
