The Kikuyu Council of Elders becomes the latest institution to make such calls, further urging the political class not to politicize the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

Speaking in Murang'a on Thursday, the council national chair Wachira Kiago said that continued politicization of the BBI report is making it hard for the general public to understand it.

Kiago also noted that politicians are also not engaging in the ongoing debate for the sake of the citizens but rather for their own good, telling them to address what benefits Kenyans.

"The politics being played around with BBI are by no means meant to benefit the public, these leaders are only driving their own interests" he is quoted by the People Daily.

Mr Kiago also bashed the group for accepting to be divided by petty politics. He noted that politicizing the document renders efforts used to compile it a wastage.

On the council's stand on the report, he said that they fully support it as it seeks to enhance national cohesion and unity among all ethnic communities in the country.

The remarks come at a time when the region appears to be speaking the same language on the report after its opposers made a U-turn and backed the recommendations.

But still, the politicians remain divided by their backing of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto.
