The upcoming Kibra by-election scheduled for November has yet again intensified rivalry between DP William Ruto and Raila Odinga's allies.

On Monday, former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, who is drumming support for McDonald Mariga of Jubilee vowed to ensure Jubilee clinches the seat.

While addressing a huge crown in Africa's second biggest slum, Khalwale also asked Mr Odinga to retire from active politics on grounds that 'it's time for the youth'.

"I have ever supported Raila to be president. I know secrets. Time has come for us to kick out old people like Baba by sending them home. We shall be coming back for campaigns in Kibra. Mariga must win," he said.

ODM is under pressure to retain the seat which was left vacant by Ken Okoth, who succumbed to cancer in July. The party has since nominated his brother Imran Okoth.

And on Tuesday, ODM chairman John Mbadi lashed at Khalwale, promising him a humiliating defeat in November polls. Mbadi also accused Khalwale of allegedly being idle.

"Someone like Khalwale, is an embarrassment. He served as MP twice and senator once yet he's broke. He doesn't have any meaningful economic activity to do other than washing utensils at Ruto's home. We shall defeat his candidate like we did to him in Kakamega in 2017," he said.

From a staunch critic of DP William Ruto, Dr Khalwale is currently a close ally of the country's second in command. He joined Jubilee early this year from Ford Kenya.

In the past rallies, Khalwale has often insisted that Dr Ruto is at pole position to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, arguing that Luhya people should support the DP for a stake in government.

Dr Khalwale is a front runner in the race to succeed Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, who retires in 2022. Senator Cleophas Malala is expected to be his main competitor.
