Renowned gospel musician Mercy Masika has renewed her call for artistes to be paid what is due to them as she hit out at the Music Copyright Society of Kenya.
Speaking in the latest episode of K24 Television's 'Upclose and Personal', the songbird decried the struggles that scores of artistes have to go through which she blamed on corruption.
She said that MCSK, which is charged with the responsibility of collecting royalties on behalf of artistes, was not giving artistes what was rightly theirs.
"The sad thing is that it is usually a struggle for very long and it's that way because of the corruption, the MCSK is not giving us what is ours. The corruption has really been something, " she told Betty Kyalo, the programme's host.
A debate on royalties was triggered weeks ago when renowned rap star Khaligraph Jones shared a screenshot of an M-Pesa message that he had received from MCSK, bringing home the peanuts that established musicians receive from the society.
Masika confirmed that she had also received the meagre amount.
President Uhuru Kenyatta waded into the royalties debate and ordered the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch investigations into the activities of MCSK.
Uhuru issued the order when he graced the funeral of renowned Benga crooner John DeMathew.
Early this week, DCI boss George Kinoti withdrew security detail of MCSK officials.
