Two people died in Ng’ati area of Maella in Naivasha after a quarry they were in collapsed and buried them alive.
Relatives, workmates and members of the public were still coming to terms with the death of the two sand harvesters.
According to standardmedia.co.ke, six other sand harvesters managed to escape death narrowly during the Sunday incident.
Operations were temporarily paralysed as the workers together with the area residents retrieved the two from the quarry an hour later after it collapsed before being rushed to hospital.
The two workers were rushed to a nearby health centre but they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Maella MCA Gathariki Kamanu cautioned sand harvesters against working during the rainy season as the ongoing rains that have flooded farms and homes are the cause for the weakening of the ground and causing the quarry to collapse.
Kamanu however said sand harvesting has given the youth in the area employment opportunities despite the danger it posed.
“The incident is an accident and the mine they were working on was deep. Harvesters have to be cautious of the weak soil,” said Kamanu.
The police have launched investigations into the incident.
