Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago on Tuesday firmly told off Ng'enyilel MCA David Sing'oei over his proposal to loosen restrictions on the sale and consumption of alcohol.
Sing'oei who is also the Uasin Gishu County Assembly Chief Whip had suggested that alcohol should be sold openly unlike the current state where only specific joints are licenced.
Speaking during Sisibo cultural festival in Eldoret town, Mandago said that legalizing brews in the county would take back development progress achieved so far.
He insisted that alcohol should be restricted to only persons over eighteen years.
"I can't accept such an idea at all, you cannot take us back to retrogressive days where clubs were all over and many of our people sold land at expense of their children," said Mandago.
The county boss further dismissed the MCA's claims that there are no restrictions on the sale of alcohol in developed countries as well as neighbouring countries.
"In Uganda alcohol is sold even in the local shops and no one consumes a lot, this should be replicated in Kenya also since Kenyans will get used to and there will be no abuse of the alcoholic substance," the MCA said.
In response, Mandago said Kenyans should not be cheated that even the developed countries allow alcohol saying; "we cannot follow other peoples’ cultures at the expense of our generation."
