President Uhuru Kenyatta has explained how it took courage to sit down with ODM leader Raila Odinga to start dialogue before March 2018 handshake.
According to the President, both him and Raila had 'fears' when meeting given the tough politics that had been embroiled in.
"Our meeting wasn't easy. We had fears. I was asking myself, what will I tell this person? (Kukutana kwetu haikuwa kitu rahisi... tulikuwa na hofu... ilikuwa unajiuliza... huyu mtu tukikutana tutaambiana nini?)" he said as quoted by the Star.
The President who spoke at the Bomas of Kenya on Wednesday during launching of BBI report, said it took him 45 minutes before starting to discuss the road to reunite Kenya.
"We took tea for 45 minutes and we were speaking nothing. We only engaged on normal greetings, how our families were doing and so on. (Tulikunywa chai 45 minutes na hakuna mwenye alikuwa anaogea... ilikuwa tunauliza; habari ya nyumbani... habari ya mama.... wako tu.... habari ya watoto... wako sawa," he said.
The head of state also noted that the two nearly slept at the room where they were holed up, taking them over 19 hours to settle some of contentious issues.
"Nothing was coming out but after an hour, we started speaking. We nearly slept there. We left the room satisfied. (Hakuna maneno mengine ambayo yangeweza kutoka.. after one hour then we started discussions... we nearly slept there... tukimaliza tukasema tofauti zetu sio kubwa vile...,)" Uhuru said.
Earlier, Mr Odinga also confirmed that it took them 19 hours to finally resolve their differences before they made their truce public in March 2018.
"It took a long 19 hours to discuss this. After the long deliberations, we agreed among ourselves," he said.
Raila said they then called for legal advice from two lawyers.
"We then invited two lawyers to come and put these views that we had together... and we said we will have this conversation among us," he said.
