Mr Joseph Mbugua,21, is said to have drowned at Golden Palm Hotel in Kenol on Sunday according to the statement by his three friends who happened to witness the incident.

Murang'a South DCIO David Cheruiyot confirmed the incident and insisted that investigations are underway to establish the truth behind the death of the student.

“The police are determined to establish cause of the student’s death. An inquest file has been opened at Makuyu Police Station,” said Cheruiyot.

Until his death, Mr Mbugua, a student at Kenya Medical Training College, Thika, was in his third and final year. Preliminary investigations confirmed that he drowned.

However, the family of the deceased has rubbished the report and has since hired a pathologist to carry out a second autopsy. They insist that the deceased would have not drowned in a small swimming pool.

“The family want a second autopsy conducted in our presence. We are yet to understand how he drowned in a small swimming pool yet he knows how to swim,” said Stephen Gathemba.
