It emerges that a number of small and avoidable mistakes are the reasons behind Jubilee Party Kibra parliamentary hopeful McDonald Mariga's current blockage from vying.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will declare his fate on Monday, after earlier in the week disapproving his bid for not being a registered voter.

On Friday, it was heard that failure to sign on a voter acknowledgement slip was one of the reasons behind the confusion on whether or not he is a voter.

This was said by Starehe Deputy Registration Officer Ishamel Yassin, who added that when he went to register as a voter at Kariokor on August 26, the footballer did not even have is ID.

He said that he had to send his aides to fetch it, while the party also failed to forward his contacts to the IEBC for the returning officer to invite him for the pre-nomination meeting.

While the other candidates were attending a meeting on September 5, Mariga was absent, said Kibra Constituency Returning officer Beatrice Muli.

She added that when Mariga submitted his nomination certificate, his name was missing from the electronic register. The same register will be used in the by-election.

"An aspirant she should be a registered voter. The only way to verify was by checking their names in the KIEMs and we did that through biometrics or alphanumeric,” she said.

A voter has also opposed his nomination on grounds that he is not a registered voter, telling the IEBC Dispute Resolution Committee that he is not fit to represent her in parliament.

"He, therefore, does not qualify to vie for Kibra seat as an MP,” said Lena Kochela.

Prior to his nomination, Mariga was only known as a soccer player and not a politician.
