Four people sustained serious injuries and seven others sustained minor injuries following an early Thursday morning, 5 am road accident at Nyatieko area along Kisii-Kegogi in Kitutu Chache South constituency, Kisii County.
Witnesses said the driver of a 14 seater matatu ferrying traders from Kegogi to Daraja Mbili market tried to avoid hitting pedestrians who were crossing the road leading to the accident.
"The matatu driver veered off the road when he tried to escape hitting pedestrians who were crossing the road carelessly. The Nissan matatu rolled several times and the process three passengers were injured seriously while others sustained minor injuries," said Maureen Nyakara.
She said members of the public who heard the accident victims screaming for help rushed to the scene to rescue the victims.
Area chief Ronald Ongeri said the three passengers who sustained serious injuries were rushed to Kisii Teaching and referral hospital for treatment while those with minor injuries were rushed to a local health centre.
"I am appealing to members of the public to be vigilant when crossing the roads to curb unnecessary accidents. We don't want to continue having unnecessary deaths," he said.
He urged motorists to embrace safety measures while using the roads in the area during this season children are reporting back to school.
