Kisumu governor Anyang Nyongo has revealed how governors played a major role in making the ongoing regional Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) forums as success.
So far, two consultative forums have been held in Nyanza (Kisii County) and Western (Kakamega), with the third edition scheduled for Mombasa county on Saturday.
Speaking on KTN on Wednesday night, he said that they pressured President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, the BBI founders, to convene the meetings.
"We as governors put pressure on President Uhuru and Raila Odinga and said the people must be brought together and given some kind of way of discussing the BBI," he said.
He hoped that the BBI results in constitutional changes which will lead to a change of the current leadership system and bring on board a more inclusive system.
According to the county boss, there is need to do away with the current winner takes it all setup, also proposing strong constitutional weapons against tribalism.
He said that judging by the ethnic divisions in the country, there is need for the establishment of a parliamentary governance system, as opposed to the current presidential.
"The idea of a winner take it all is not good for developing countries. A country which is divided along ethnic lines and others requires a parliamentary democracy which includes minorities and ethnic representation," he added.
