In a tweet on Friday, the outspoken legislator noted that justice had finally been served, adding that his only regret was that the country had abolished the death sentence.

"Two days ago, Magistrate Francis Andayi sitting at the Milimani Law Courts sentenced three terror convicts to lengthy jail terms ranging between 41 years to life. My only regret is that the death sentence is no longer constitutional in Kenya.

"Four years on, this landmark ruling may not bring back the victims of the Garissa University attack, but it signals an important realization of justice for our fallen comrades," he tweeted.

On Wednesday, Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi slapped the three suspects with harsh sentences.

Rashid Charles Mberesero, a Tanzanian national was sentenced for life, while Mohamed Ali Abdikar and Hassan Aden Hassan were handed 41 years jail sentence.

They were charged for helping the Al-Shabaab in planning their attack on Garissa University.

During the hearing, the prosecution requested the court to hand the three suspects a life sentence.
