Speaking in Mwala on Thursday, Mutua said that Sonko should stop being reluctant in taking legal action against companies discharging raw sewage into River Athi.

He said that Machakos residents are risking getting infected with waterborne diseases and hunger due to lack of clean water for farming and consumption.

He said that on his part, he has ensured no company in Machakos is polluting the river.

"There is a problem at River Athi because of the poison being discharged into the river, our people are at risk of contracting diseases," said Mutua.

"The pollution is not from Machakos but from factories in Nairobi," he added.

He said that he and other Ukambani governors will storm Nairobi and close all the companies polluting the river if Sonko is unable to act.

"I want to tell my brother Sonko that we won't accept Nairobi people to kill Machakos people, If you are unable to take action Ngilu, Kibwana and I will come there and close those factories down, " he said.

On Monday thousands of dead fish were found in the river, a possible consequence of water pollution.
