The Greek government is set to expel the Libyan ambassador, Aljazeera has reported.
Greece's move is in response to a controversial agreement signed between Libya and Turkey mapping out a see boundary.
The news of the expulsion was relayed by the Greek foreign minister Nikos Dendias who disparaged the agreement as a blatant violation of international law.
Renowned Greece correspondent said that by signing the deal, the Libyans had somewhat engaged in trickery.
"It was known that these talks were going on, the Greeks were concerned, but off-the-record discussions that the foreign ministers had, that the ambassador had with counterparts here, were that it was not a realistic prospect," he said as quoted by Aljazeera. "[Greek officials] believe that there is a certain amount of trickery on the Libyan part," he added.
The Turkish government expressed strong condemnation for the expulsion of the Libya ambassador, saying that it was outrageous and immature.
Of course, I condemn it,” Turkish ambassador Mevlut Cavusoglu told a group of journalists as quoted by the Washington Post.
“Libya is a sovereign, independent state and the Libyan people give utmost importance to their dignity. Expelling an ambassador for signing an agreement with another independent country is actually showing the real face of Greece, " he added.
The controversial agreement was inked on 27, November 2019, Arab News reported.
