Most African universities have not had a major impact when it comes to ranking but the ODM leader believes the continent is moving to the right direction in terms of education.

Speaking in Morocco on Friday where he's attending a stakeholders meeting on Infrastructural development, Raila seemed to back Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, saying it had shown signs of setting high standards.

"Usually when Africans speak of studying abroad we think of institutions outside the continent. The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Morocco is setting world standards in Agricultural research, technology and infrastructure.

"They offer best practice models to be emulated on the continent and solutions to Africa's agriculture challenges," wrote Mr Odinga.

Mr Odinga, a Pan-Africanist par excellence, studied in East Germany an engineering course before becoming a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, then Royal College of Nairobi. He quit for Kenya Bureau of Standards.

In the latest ranking though, most top universities in Africa come from South Africa. University of Cape Town, University of Pretoria and University of Witwatersrand are ranked among the top.
