Literally, the old ODM Pentagon of 2007 that took the country by storm has reemerged only that the old friends are now in different political camps.

Today, the trio have contrasting political fortunes; Ruto is the second most powerful Kenyan, Raila, though out of the government, remains at the top of the game and Mudavadi is now the face of the opposition in the country. In short, they are still controlling Kenyan politics, 12 years later.

The Kibra race is however a tricky political adventure for all of them. As for Raila, a win for ODM will allay fears that his 2018 handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta is killing him politically.

Then there is Dr Ruto, a shrewd political operator who mastered the game after working with Raila for over five years. Today, he is a no-pushover in Kenyan politics. A win for him in Kibra will no doubt be a strong message that he is the man to watch during the 2022 election.

For Mudavadi, victory will bring his political career back on track after operating in the shadow of Ruto and Raila for years.

The great 'Pentagon' may be dead but its key luminaries have come together in opposing camps in what rekindles the memories of 2007 where Raila and Ruto were political buddies.

As to who will emerge the winner remains a gamble.
