On Tuesday, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) released a report on corruption statistics in various government offices. The report indicates that the Registrar of Persons, which was was ranked at 19.9%, is the most corrupt department in the current government.
The ranking comes barely a fortnight after Interior Cabinet Secretary made an impromptu visit to the office and sacked several officers over corruption-related charges.
Public hospitals and Police service emerged second and third respectively. They were ranked at (19.7%) and (17.2%) in the respective order.
The office of the Chiefs' ranked fourth with 16% and Lands Ministry at 6.3% took the fifth position.
EACC Chairperson Eliud Wabukhala said that the level of graft has reduced compared to the previous years.
Wabukala also said that the country's corruption index is Ksh. 3,833.14 compared to the last two years’ Ksh. 5,058.75 two years ago to Ksh. 3,833.14.
“This was the lowest recorded since 2012,” the National Ethics and Corruption Survey 2018 report read in part, as quoted by Citizen Digital.
The Kenya Police Service was listed as the most corrupt in the category of government agencies. The second and third positions were taken by the Kenya Power (12%) and NHIF (11%) respectively.
During the research, the respondents of the interview said that corruption is the top challenge the government has been facing in the delivery of the duties.
The other challenges are unemployment at 36.8% and poverty at 27.2%), poor infrastructure (13.4%), insecurity (10.2%) and Cost of living at 16.9%).
The research was undertaken in all the 47 counties across the nation.
The release of the report comes at a time when President Uhuru Kenyatta has reiterated his stand in the war against graft.
