Governor Salim Mvurya and his Deputy Fatuma Achani asked the health workers to perform or quit following massive complaints from patients.

Speaking when he opened Msambweni Referral Hospital’s Blood satellite Bank Centre, Governor Mvurya directed Health CeC Francis Gwama to fire unproductive health workers without consulting him saying that from now on, the focus will be on personnel and not buildings.

“From today onwards, the focus will no longer be buildings and infrastructure but on personnel. Staff must deliver services to Kwale people or ship out. We promised the people better services and we will not compromise on this,” said Mvurya.

The Governor said since assuming office in 2013, he has always made sure that stuff salaries are paid promptly which should serve as an incentive for better service delivery.

“I am directing you 'waziri' Gwama that any nurse or doctor who fails to meet our performance card should be sacked immediately without reference to me,” said the governor.

Achani said she had received numerous calls from patients, some at night, complaining about poor services at Msambweni Referral Hospital and urged Gwama and Chief Officer Dr. Mwaleso Kishindo to work on this including sending non-performers home.

“I am not happy with the services offered at Msambweni Referral Hospital. People are forced, for example, on payment through the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) when they don’t know what it is. Educate them first. They are also told to go and buy drugs from chemists when we have them, why?" she wondered.

She said the purpose of devolution was to make sure residents get better services closer home which is not happening.

Governor Mvurya said the Blood Bank Center was constructed at a costs of Sh32 million; Sh15 million from Base Titanium Company, Sh11 million from the County Government and Ksh6 million from German Development Cooperation through GIZ.

He further announced that a 72-bed capacity maternity wing is being built at Msambweni Referral Hospital and a Sh60 million cancer center will soon be constructed at the same place.

"We are committed to improving our health facilities across the county and we'll endeavour to work with our esteemed partners to ensure we achieve the best for our citizens," he said on Monday.
