Led by Ibrahim Abdi Khalilullah, a clan elder, the locals have expressed concern that a group of about ten men involving both locals and non-locals was behind the unexplained disappearance of over 50 donkeys in a span of 2 months.

"From January this year alone, I have personally lost at least ten big Mochos never to trace them. My nomadic life has completely been destabilised," Ibrahim said.

Another resident by the name Abduswalaf Fazzul who claims to have lost seven donkeys revealed that the syndicate could also be involving a section of local leaders.

"This is a well connected web. I hear some local administrations here have been corrupted by agents in this syndicate. We have complained severally and nothing is forthcoming, " Fazzul stated.

Fazzul added that he has, on several occassions, reported the incident at the Elwak Police Station but no arrests have so far been made.

The residents have now issued a one week ultimatum, urging local leadership to work with relevant security agencies to bring the masterminds of the theft to book.

They also threatened to take action on a number of suspects said to be living in their midst if no progress is recorded upon the expiry of the ultimatum.

The residents spoke on Saturday in Elwak town.

Efforts to seek clarification on the progress of the case at the local police station proved futile.
