A man succumbed to injuries after irate residents of Kabonyo in Nyando on Wednesday beat him up for allegedly exercising witchcraft.
Trouble for the man reportedly aged between 60-70 years started after his cat allegedly bit a neighbour’s calf resulting to the calf's death.
They descended on the man with kicks and blows alongside his daughter who was at the scene.
Though he managed to escape with the daughter from their tormentors, he succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at a public hospital in Kisumu.
The crowd later tried to torch the man’s house but police officers intervened and saved the situation.
It was not immediately clear the circumstances that led to the 'cat bite' but residents claimed that the old man was using the cat for witchcraft purposes since to them there was no way a normal cat can bite a calf to death.
Others argued that it is normal in the first place for a cat to bite a calf.
Cases of attacks on the elderly following claims of witchcraft are rare in Kisumu County.
However witchcraft in the region is a familiar concept and in fact, most of the witch doctors are said to use snakes to perform their witchcraft.
