In Thika town, there are as many brothels as there are sex workers.
Every brothel is designed to target a particular kind of clientele depending on how heavy one's pocket is.
We are going to group these brothels based on clientele and location within the town.
1. 'Heri kichaka' brothels: These are low-end brothels in Thika town centre that charge from as low as Sh300 a night. Revellers who frequent them say 'having it' in a bush is better than doing it in these brothels. That is why they are called 'heri kichaka'.
They also note that the brothels are dirty to the core, beds are heavily infested with lice and fleas while the bedding materials are stained with only God knows what. Doors are loose while windows have broken glasses allowing mosquitoes to get in and out at their own pleasure.
2. 'Maliza utoke' brothels: These brothels will charge from Sh300 also but your stay there mostly should not exceed two hours at most. The fast you finish the business that has taken you there the better because there are others who want to use the room.
The brothels, revellers say, are clean, bedding materials are cleaned and changed regularly. Their general condition is generally good.
3. Estate brothels: You will find these brothels in Thika estates. Many belong to the second category and are frequented by estate sex workers and their clients.
4. Guesthouses: These are not even referred to as brothels though they serve the same purpose as brothels. These are executive, high-end brothels located mainly on the western side of Thika town.
They are expensive and secretive and not every Tom, Dick and Harry is allowed access. We can simply describe them as 'home away from home'.
