The gorge has since been closed after the accident as government officials embark on a probe into the circumstances behind the painful deaths.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, has caused mixed reactions from different quarters. Confirming the closure of the gorge, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) management said that it is saddened by the incident.

The deceased included six Kenyans and one Indian national. The efforts of the security team to save lives at the gorge hit a dead end after nearly a 24-hour search and rescue mission.

In a statement released to media houses on Monday evening, KWS said that there will be no activity at the gorge until further notice. The management also said that the search operations have since been called off after the discovery.

“One body was recovered last evening, three overnight and three others this morning. This brings to seven the death toll from the tragic flash floods,” said KWS.

“The search and rescue operation has been called off this afternoon after bodies of all the missing tourists and their guide were accounted for.”

KWS has said that the closure of the gorge was prompted by the heavy downpour pounding the area.
