President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto are to blame for the woes facing tea farmers across the country, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has said.
Speaking on Monday during the burial of industrialist Stephen Ongenyo Mogeni at Ikonge in Nyamira County, Cheruyoit said that the President and his Deputy have proven beyond doubt that they do not have the will of farmers at heart.
He argued that farmers from tea growing areas have no reason to smile because Uhuru and Ruto have turned their backs on them.
He questioned what befell a taskforce that the President and his Deputy had commissioned to look into the woes of the farmers.
He noted that the government had decided to remain silent on the woes facing the farmers yet they have lamented over the same for a very long time and nothing was forthcoming.
“In 2016, the President commissioned a task force to find out woes bedevilling tea farming in the country and up to now, we are yet to see the results of the report which had brought some false hopes to farmers,” Cheruiyot said, as quoted by Standard.
The senator also asked Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’ i to remind his agriculture counterpart that the government should come to rescue of farmers from different parts of the country for the sake of their economic growth. He said that the recent actions of the government have left farmers in a desperate state.
