Having remained as the voice of the opposition especially after the March 2018 handshake between President Kenyatta and ODM party leader Raila Odinga, many did not expect Mudavadi to attend such a function.

However, while breaking his silence over the matter, Mudavadi dismissed claims of a possible political deal, stating that he was invited for the functions by the Head of State.

"I was invited by the President to accompany him to the events in Garissa, anyone would be reading too much beyond that," the former vice president said as quoted by Standard.

Mudavadi, who was Uhuru's running mate in 2002, has of late emerged as the government's fiercest critic, even as he attempts to be "his own man", and take a shot at the presidency come the next general election.

He has always dismissed reports suggesting that he could enter into a political deal with Deputy President William Ruto come the 2022 polls, especially after the collapse of the NASA coalition.
