The Kenya Revenue Authority has issued a stern warning to individuals not paying their dues to the government.
KRA Deputy Commissioner for Investigation and Enforcement Edward Karanja said they are targeting to prosecute 600 individuals this year for tax evasion related cases.
KRA revealed that last year, 222 individuals faced various offences relating to evasion and avoidance of tax payment and this year they seek to prosecute more.
Karanja said in their effort to ensure that individuals pay their tax, they have devised a new mechanism that will help catch the tax evaders.
“For this financial year, we conduct a prosecution guided investigation so that those people who are not paying taxes know that we will catch up with them we intend to proactively detect, deter and prosecute the tax evaders,” said Karanja.
The deputy commissioner said they are working with 11 prosecutors provided by the Director of Criminal Investigations to ensure those found culpable of evading tax face the full consequences of the law.
The measures are part of KRA plans to boost its revenue collection as the taxman seeks to collect Sh15 billion from filed cases on tax evaders.
“This is a mix of cases and it touches almost on all sectors, and we are sure we will recover tax revenue from over 95 per cent prosecutions,” Karanja added.
