This

condition can be as a result

of a cold or flu. However, other factors have been linked to it as well.

Here are some of the common causes of blocked nose during the night that you ought to know:

1. Allergies

Exposure to some allergens can actually cause the condition.

Pollens, smoke, dust, pet dander and some chemicals cause the mucous membrane inside the nose to become swollen, and this is normally due to heightened mucous secretions and increased blood flow to the nasal.

2. Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a lot of progesterone and oestrogens are released.

It is reported that these pregnancy hormones increase the flow of blood to different parts of the body including the nasal.

This causes swelling of the mucous membrane which, in turn, blocks the nose.

3. Physical obstruction

Here, there are two key factors of physical obstruction that may make you experience a blocked nose at night. The first one is nasals polyps which are characterised by a small growth of tissues in the nasal passage. The second factor that causes a blocked nose is a deviated septum. They arise as a result of congenital malformations or an injury.
