Senators were on Thursday left in shock and disbelieve by the deplorable living conditions of Prison wardens at Eldoret GK prison.
The Senate leadership and members of the Senate Standing Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights were also shocked to find that the prison holds almost two times the capacity.
“The wardens live in mud houses and the population of 53,000 exceeds the capacity of 27,000 prisoners,” wrote Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo junior on his official Facebook page.
Senator Mutula further pointed out that delays in prosecuting capital offences had led to the overcrowding of prisons adding that the trend was worrying hence need to reform the sector.
Similar sentiments were echoed by Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika. Kihika is the majority Chief whip and also a member of the committee.
“Today the Senate Standing Committee on Justice, Legal Affairs and Human Rights visited the Eldoret GK Prison and Remands to assess the welfare and human rights issues in the prison as we continue supporting prison reform,” wrote the senator on her Facebook page.
The 67 Senators have been in Uasin Gishu County since Monday where they are holding their business in the inaugural 'Senate Mashinani' the first of its kind to be held outside Nairobi.
They are set to conclude the historic sittings on Friday before returning to Nairobi.
