No one can deny the fact that the 2022 succession debate is one of the major topics in the country. Every platform is engaging different personalities to debate the matter.
When you switch on your television, your radio and any other media around, you will hear a number of debates on the 2022 polls.More so, the debates revolve around Deputy President William Ruto and the Kikuyu votes, or rather the Central Kenya support, considering his memorable support for President Uhuru Kenyatta during the 2013 and the 2017 elections. The two leaders at that time had cases at the Hague with led to a unity that brought together the Kikuyus and the Kalenjins, who had differed after the 2007 elections. This marked a new 'debt' for Kikuyus, which is somehow putting pressure on Central Kenya voters and their leaders.Other debts that the Central Kenya region is said to owe include the Jaramogi-Kenyatta debt, which can be traced back to 1963 when Jaramogi Oginga Odinga insisted that Kenyatta who had been detained in 1952 had to be released from prison before they formed a government. Logically, it will be wise for Central Kenya to ignore the oldest 'debts' and focus on the current UhuRuto debt, considering some of these earlier debts are almost out of date. For instance, in the Jaramogi-Kenyatta debt, the two big names who brought about the debt are already dead, and so should be their debt. There is a saying that goes “better the devil you know than the angle you don’t know”. When you revisit history, you will realise some debts have been ignored for some time and nothing happened thereafter. For instance, the Jaramogi-Kenyatta debt and the Kibaki-Raila debt have been ignored for several elections and nothing happened. There is, however, no single one that involved William Ruto and the Kalenjins. It is hard to predict how they will react when they are betrayed by President Kenyatta.Clearing UhuRuto debt will also clear all other debts. Central Kenya has not been paying their debts and now they have accumulated, and somehow destroying their reputations. Things will totally change if they decide to clear the latest debt, as the rest will be forgotten. Don't we say "He who laughs last laughs best?" They need to laugh the best this time around.Central Kenya leaders, Mwai Kibaki and Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, already left office with debts, and it will be wise for Uhuru Kenyatta to leave behind a different legacy by ensuring he pays his debt to Ruto. This will make other leaders from different regions of the country to trust other Central Kenya leaders that will come after Uhuru.
