This comes at a time when the ongoing rains continue to wreak havoc in the region, having displaced 2,850 families in Rangwe and Karachuonyo constituencies alone.

Speaking when she led the national government officials in distributing relief food to the affected families on Sunday, Rangwe MP Lilian Gogo called for permanent interventions.

"Our people should not suffer from the effects of floods every year. Time has come for all stakeholders to think of implementing permanent mitigation measures to cushion our people from this menace," she said.

The officials, led by Homa Bay County Commissioner David Kipkemei gave out 200 bags of beans, 370 bags of rice and 50 bales of Uji Mix, he said that more supplies are coming.

"We also intend to bring maize and non-food items including blankets," he said.

The locals are currently camping at Nyarut Primary School and Odienya Secondary School in Rangwe and Bala Primary School in Karachuonyo Sub County.

The distribution of relief food was also overseen by Karachuonyo MP Adipo Okuome, Kochia Ward Representative Ojala Nyang'i and County Agriculture Executive Aguko Juma.

The locals demanded to have the Sh2 million they were promised by governor Cyprian Awiti two weeks ago.
