Former chief government pathologist Moses Njue was arraigned in court on Monday over allegations of stealing human organs, while conducting a postmortem test.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Hannah Ndung’u, a witness said he saw the accused take away part of a victim's heart, during a postmortem test.
According to the witness, John Mutegi, the accused harvested the organ from the body of Benedict Karau, while carrying out an autopsy at Consolata Hospital Nkubu.
Mutegi insisted that he could not have mistaken the organ, as he had worked as a mortuary attendant for 19 years, and therefore was familiar with the appearance of the organ.
“Dr Kimani put the samples, which included part of the heart, in four containers, which I helped her seal after which she gave them to a police officer to take to the Government Chemist,” Mutegi told the court as quoted by Standard
He was, however, questioned over contradicting statements on how the accused obtained a polythene bag in which he wrapped half of the heart as he had earlier alleged.
“You testified that Dr Njue had already removed his lab coat and put it away when he wrapped the heart and walked out of the morgue with it, but now you are telling this court that he got the polythene bag from the lab coat pocket. So which version is true?” John Abwuor, an advocate, questioned the witness.
