In a decade or two, you will either have a daughter coming out of age or you will have someone’s daughter (for a man) warming your bed. It never occurs to you, in case of the latter scenario, that you daughter would warm someone’s bed, someone older than you.

The rights and wrongs of the ’sponsor’ and young girls relationship can be quickly dismissed with the fact that it is consensual. It is between two mature adults, with all their brain cells in perfect working condition. But then it could right for one and wrong another. According to yours truly it is wrong. 

Parents sometimes contribute to the ladies drifting to sponsors. Once the girl finds a suitor, the first question the parents ask is what he does for a living. It may be an innocent question that parents ask to be sure their daughter can be well taken care of, but sacrifices the lucky man’s identity (who he really is) to what he possesses, material wise. 

Methinks, it is the same way dowry was invented. Parents wanted to be sure that their daughter would be marrying into a family that was well off, that giving away a few herds of cattle would not dent their wealth. It was some sort of assurance. 

We, however, live in modern times, far away from the traditional systems that glued our society together. The change has brought about challenges, especially on the economic front. There are no jobs for the youths, who have taken refuge in gambling for the boys and sponsors for the girls.

Back in the day, when we were kids, our parents would never allow us to have things that we did not belong to us. If she found out, that would be a ticket to a thorough beating. Nowadays, a girl will show up with flashy lifestyles and the parent won’t even question it even when they know she does not have a job. 

What is more worrying is the old man, who has daughters will go about this business without a worry in the world. As parents, they don’t stop to ask themselves this moral question: is what I am doing right should someone else be doing the same with my daughter?
