She vied against Jack Ranguma for the 2013 ODM party Kisumu gubernatorial ticket.

Ranguma won the ODM ticket, and went on to become the first Kisumu County governor in 2013.

“The nominations were bungled. No one won, no one lost but he (Ranguma) was given the party ticket,” she once told this writer.

An advocate by profession, she did not lose hope of once serving as Kisumu County governor.

She jumped ship and joined President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party.

There was no competition in Jubilee for party slots in Kisumu County ahead of the 2017 general elections, hence automatically becoming the party’s gubernatorial aspirant in Kisumu last year.

She contested against ODM’s Professor Peter Anyang Nyong’o among other hopefuls.

Nyong’o carried the day, and is now serving as Kisumu County’s second governor.

Since the elections, Mrs Atieno, the mother of three has been quiet. At this stage, it is not yet clear whether she will vie for the seat again in 2022.

As it stands, for now, she has moved away from the politics of the day to focus on her businesses.

“I am doing my own business,” she said when contacted by this writer.
