A section of politicians has declared support for referendum push while others are against it.Garissa Township Aden Duale, Deputy President William Ruto, and ANC Party leader Musalia Mudavadi are among top leaders who are opposing the referendum push.On the other hand, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga says that referendum is a must and is unstoppable.

According to political analyst Peter Ngure, DP Ruto's camp is afraid that amending the 2010 constitution will affect their 2022 presidential plan.

Ngure says that DP Ruto's 2022 bid could suffer a serious set back if the constitution is changed.

He said that people pushing for constitution amendment are proposing the creation of Prime Minister position.

The analyst also observes that those pushing the review are seeking to have the presidential term combined with deputy President term, meaning that the President and his Deputy cannot contest in any election once they serve their two terms.

"DP Ruto's camp has every reason to worry because of the referendum proposal being pushed by some politicians," he said.

He added that the constitutional amendment could provide space for President Uhuru Kenyatta to contest again in 2022," he said.

Duale has been quoted saying that they will do everything to stop the referendum push.

The Garissa MP says that constitution review should wait after the 2022 general election.

On Thursday, Raila said that referendum push is unstoppable.

Raila who spoke in Awendo said that referendum was part of his handshake deal with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
