Human greed is what contributed to the Monday morning tragedy at Precious Talent School on Ngong Road in Nairobi County, former Kikuyu MP Paul Muite has said.
Muite said the accident, in which seven pupils lost their lives and over 50 got injured, could have been avoided had building regulations been adhered to.
"Man made, NOT act of God. Condolences to the families of the students whose young lives have been cruelly snapped up by human greed and lack of enforcement of building Regulations," the Senior Counsel tweeted.
In his condolence message, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula called for the punishment of those who fail to adhere to the highest safety standards in buildings.
"Its a terrible tragedy losing school children at Precious Talent School, Ngong Road. My condolences to the bereaved. We must ensure the highest safety standards in all buildings in the country. Those who do shoddy work must be held to account," Wetang'ula said.
The accident occurred after a two-storey building caved in and collapsed on pupils a few minutes to 7 am.
However, the school proprietor has absolved himself from the blame pointing an accusing finger at the Nairobi City County.
Terming the collapse as an 'accident', he said the building's foundation was weakened by a sewer line that was recently dug too close to the school by the county government.
“They had good intentions to help this school but an accident has happened,” he said.
