President Uhuru Kenyatta has made several foreign trips since he assumed office after the 2017 General election.
It has emerged that the head of state has already made 31 foreign trips across the World and there are more to come.
The National Treasury has not reduced the trips the President and his Deputy William Ruto can make to foreign nation amid budget cuts in different offices.
Uhuru has traveled to different countries in the recent 14 months including United Kingdom, South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Japan, Russia, Ethiopia and Tanzania among others.
The head of state is currently in Saudi Arabia where he is attending official government duties. Upon his return into the country, Uhuru is expected to fly to Botswana for the official swearing-in of President-elect Eric Mokgweetsi Masisi.
It has also been revealed that Uhuru traveled to 86 countries during his first term in office.
In 2015 alone, he made 26 foreign trips. Uhuru had announced that he is ready to take pay cuts alongside his deputy some time back but he is yet to do so.
The trips of the President have raised concern over their benefit to the nation.
According to international relations scholar Prof Macharia Munene, Uhuru’s foreign trips have at some point borne fruits depending on the outcome.
“Presidential travels are necessary and very important depending on the object and achievements. If it is a joyrider with a huge delegation of hangers on then it is wasteful. Some of these trips have been beneficial to the country while others are not,” he told the Star.
State House has also been defending Uhuru’s trips, saying that they have economic benefits which include attracting foreign investors into the country as he seeks to leave behind a legacy when he completes his second and final term in government.
