Mombasa Governor Hassan Hassan Joho on Tuesday joined hundreds in celebrating Bango maestro Mzee Joseph Katana Ngala's birthday.
The musical icon turned 84 but is still entertaining the young and old, locally and beyond Kenyan borders.
"Honoured to join our very own legendary and iconic Bango maestro Mzee Joseph Katana Ngala for his 84th birthday celebrations. His songs entertained and educated millions both locally and internationally.I was privileged to share from his wisdom and experiences in life," Joho tweeted.
The legendary Mzee Ngala has been in the music industry for more than six decades. The 84-year-old saxophonist started his career in 1954 with a group of friends in Mombasa using self-improvised instruments.
He mastered the art of playing the clarinet and established himself as a great artiste whose fame went beyond Kenyan borders.
He has been a member of several bands throughout his six-decade music career. Some of the most notable bands he has been a member of are Bahari Boys, Bango Sounds and Teusi Five.
He has nurtured several artistes including Afro Simba, Juma Tutu and Gogosimo among others.
Ngala's contribution to music is enormous. He is the creator of Bango music genre after the name was taken from his “Naitaka Bango” hit. Bango is a Coastal word for Sh5.
