In a gazette notice, Matiang’i  said that all private security firms in the country must comply with the new requirements for licensing failure to which they will be closed down by January 5.

The CS said that the government is no longer ready to tolerate firms training guards to offer security to millions of Kenyans from different walks of life to operate without licenses.

He asked the security firms to rush and beat the said deadline before they are closed down by the government.

The new move will see close to 500,000 guards affected if the companies fail to comply with the requirements from the government.

The government, under Private Security (General) Regulations 2019 has asked all these firms to ensure that they have registered with the Private Security Regulatory Authority to allow them run their businesses or else they will be phased out of the business.

The Protective Security Industry Association (PSIA) Chairperson Cosmas Mutava said that most of the firms risk closure because the conditions are too tough for them.

"We must be honest and say that we cannot comply with the regulations within the set deadline," he said, as quoted by Standard.
