Governor Nyong’o has banned the washing of vehicles along the shores of Lake Victoria.

Addressing members of the public during the 55th Jamhuri Day Celebrations at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium on Wednesday, Nyong’o said the activity has led to pollution of Lake Victoria for a very long time now.

He said his government will collaborate with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to ensure the Lake is a clean haven.

“Henceforth, there shall be no washing of cars in the lake or any river within the county. Those found contravening this order shall be faced with heavy penalties,” said Governor Nyong'o.

Washing of cars, Lorries, canters, motorcycles and tuk tuks is rampant along the shores of Lake Victoria, especially at the Lwang’ini beach.

Over 50 youths are currently engaged in the activity. Most of them claim that it is their source of livelihood, with the dangers that come with the activity notwithstanding.

The activity entails vehicles being washed right inside the lake, with dust and soap waste all ending up in the fresh water body that also serves Uganda and Tanzania.
