Kibera MP Ken Okoth has asked Governor Mike Sonko to continue with demolition of buildings constructed on riparian land and road reserves.
The MP wants Governor Sonko to be fearless and save Nairobians who he said have been exposed to perennial flooding as result of structures built on riparian land and road reserves.
Okoth asked the Governor and his team to extend the exercise to Kibera and clear buildings that are on road reserves.
“We want Governor Sonko and the multi-agency team to continue with the exercise which we believe is in the interest of city residents,” he said in an interview on KTN News on Thursday.
The MP said that the city can only be cleaned up if rogue buildings are demolished.
The ODM lawmaker asked investigative agencies to arrest and prosecute government officials who approved construction on riparian land.
“The Director of Public Prosecutions and other agencies should go for this people and ensure they are brought to book,” he said.
Okoth at the same time asked the multi-agency team to be humane as it brings the rogue buildings down.
He asked the agency to give notices to tenants before going to demolish the buildings.
Governor Sonko says that the demolition exercise will continue warning that no building constructed on riparian land or road reserve will be spared.
On Thursday, the multi-agency team leading the exercise issued a notice to tenants occupying the Air-gate Mall or Taj Mall to vacate.
The mall owned by businessman Ramesh Gorasia is among those set to be demolished.
