Kenya National Union of Teachers Union (Knut) secretary general Wilson Sossion has reacted to the media's characterisation of an impending MPs's trip to the US as wasteful.
Speaking on Wednesday on Citizen Television's 'Daybreak', the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) nominated Member of Parliament said that the characterisation was exaggerated.
"I think that this has been exaggerated to look like Parliament is very wasteful, it's wasting taxpayers' money, " the MP said.
He contended that the trip to the US was not a holiday trip but a working trip, saying that it was "wrong to demonise the National Assembly as if they are going on a swimming tour. "
Sossion went on to say that such trips are budgeted for and invited Kenyans to ask themselves objectively whether trips of such nature are in the best interest of the country.
His intervention comes amid claims that the government does not have enough money to drive the country's development agenda.
It also comes amid concerns that MPs are not keen on the prudent use of public resources.
A slew of daily publications were up in arms against the impending foreign trip that Sossion said would go a long way in strengthening the country's parliamentary system..
