Father Cosmas Ondari, a Kisii priest who was murdered in volatile South West of Cameroon, was after all killed by government soldiers, it has emerged.
Local media reported that the Mill Hill priest, who was ordained in 2017 March by Bishop Joseph Mairura, was a collateral damage in fiery attack between secessionists and government forces on Wednesday.
A priest from Kisii Diocese, who spoke in confidence since the matter is still under probe, disputes claims that the Father could have been a victim of Anglophone separatists.
"We have made calls and established that government forces gunned him down. They did deliberately.
"It is one of the problems missionaries have to encounter everyday and so Omboto was unlucky. It's sad that government can kill missionaries," he said.
For the last two years, anglophone separatists have been pushing for independence from francophone region, in a bid to create Africa's newest nation, Ambazonia.
Early this month, long time president Paul Biya managed to secure victory in an election that was widely disputed.
Back at home, a section of priests led by Bishop Joseph Mairura, have condemned the act, adding that it will not slow down missionaries from preaching around the world.
"He was deployed in Mamfe Diocese and it's sad that we lost him. I stand with his family at this difficult moment," he said.
