Police in Lamu on Wednesday arrested three suspects for allegedly transporting bhang and heroine.
The officers said the drugs were estimated to be worth not less than Sh22,400.
Lamu County Police Commander Muchangi Kioi confirmed the incident this Thursday morning. He said they arrested the first two suspects on Wednesday evening, who were transporting 25 rolls of bhang from Mtangawanda to Kizingitini.
The suspects were using a vehicle for their mission.
They then arrested the third person who was using a boat to ferry 18 sachets of heroin and 18 rolls of bhang. The vehicle and the boat are also in police custody.
“We received a tip-off from members of the public at Mtangawanda Jetty that a vehicle was ferrying narcotics to Kizingitini. My officers immediately swung into action by laying an ambush along the Mtangawanda-Kizingitini road.
"After a thorough search of the vehicle, we recovered 25 rolls of bhang. We immediately arrested the two suspects who were ferrying the narcotics and also confiscated the vehicle which is currently at the Kizingitini Police Station,” said Mr Kioi as quoted by Nation.
The Police Commander added that his officers had intensified patrols in suspected areas that are fully relying on tips offs from the general public in ensuring the war against drugs is successful.
Drug trafficking and abuse have been one of the major problems facing the Coast regions. Many youths have fallen victims of these drugs.
Some leaders from the region have also been blamed for the same problem. However, none of them has been found guilty in any court of law.
