Water shortage has hit several estates in Naivasha for the past three months following damaging of water pipes in the area.
The affected residents of County Council, Site and Kabati estates have been forced to dig deeper into their pockets to buy the precious commodity from water vendors.
The residents are in fear of contracting water-borne diseases as some of them get water from boreholes.
Water company CEO Eng Nahashon Wahome said the water crisis in the area was caused by the rehabilitation of some of the roads in the estates.
Speaking to The Star, Wahome said the contractor carrying out the rehabilitation work had destroyed some of the water pipes but failed to repair them.
Wahome said the water company had moved to court seeking orders to compel the contractor to repair the damaged water pipes.
“The contractor is carrying out rehabilitation of these estate roads but he is destroying everything that we have put in place forcing us to incur huge losses,” Wahome said.
Local leader James Kariuki said they have resorted to buying water from water vendors who have doubled the price for a 20-litre jerrycan which was being sold at Sh10.
Kariuki said the residents are still getting their water bills despite having dry taps.
“Water vendors who use donkeys are making a kill charging exorbitant prices. Despite the acute shortage, the water company has continued to serve us with inflated bills and we are asking the governor to intervene,” said Kariuki.
