Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior on Saturday said he received a disturbing message from a ferry worker in Mombasa.
As he rose to speak at Ngaamba in Kilome sub-county of Machakos county during the burial of Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu who perished last month when their car slid into the Indian Ocean, Mutula stated that a few days ago, a ferry worker texted him about the deplorable condition of the ferries.
"MV Nyayo, the doors are not functioning, MV Harambee which caused Mariam and her daughter Amanda's death the ramps are not working, MV Kilindini the doors started working recently but they are not yet at 45°," said the Senator.
"MV Jambo, the ferry is new but only one door is working believe me this message I got from someone I don't know," he added.
The vocal legislator stated that if proper measures had been put in place earlier, Marima and her daughter wouldn't have died.
Mutula also poked holes in the delay in recovery of the bodies stating that if it was a state officer who had drowned, everything would have come to a standstill until the body is found.
"We treat our people as second hands, if it was an MP who had drowned everything would have been stopped for the retrieval to be conducted," he said.
His sentiments were echoed by Makueni Member of Parliament Daniel Maanzo who asked the government to set aside money for repairing the ferries before similar tragedies as those of Mariam are witnessed.
