Allies of Deputy President William Ruto have criticised the arrest of Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro on Monday night.
The first-time legislator was apprehended and taken to Murang'a police station, where he was released after being in custody for about four hours.
He is facing allegations of incitement and resisting arrest following Sunday's chaos at Gitui Catholic Church in his Kiharu constituency, Murang'a.
Led by Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen, the leaders condemned the arrest and termed it a state-sponsored harassment of their colleague in the Tanga Tanga faction.
Murkomen put the Inspector General (IG) of Police Hillary Mutyambai on the spot and cautioned him against using his powers to oppress the young politician.
The Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator hoped the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji will not cooperate with the police in denying Nyoro justice if charged.
"I am actually surprised that Ndindi Nyoro has been arrested. I hope the IG Mutyambai remembers that power is transient and that we are merely temporary trustees in the offices bestowed upon us to serve and not to oppress others. I hope the DPP will stand up to be counted!" Murkomen tweeted.
Expressing similar sentiments, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruyoit asked Mutyambai to move swiftly and stop his officers from allegedly being used to settle political scores.
"IG Mutyambai, why are you allowing the police to be used to fight political wars? Respect the oath of office you took and stop this ASAP," Cheruiyot said.
